My 30 Before 30 bucket list – 15 more things to do

15 more things on my bucket list

When I told my partner I was making this list, he looked at me with severe scepticism. He thought that by making such a list I had bound myself to its completion without exception. Then if something didn’t get checked off in time, I’d beat myself up about it and feel like I failed. I was happy to tell him that that’s not at all how I approach this. I will strive to complete everything, of course, but sometimes life gets in the way. And if that happens, I’m just going to move everything that’s uncompleted to my 40 before 40 list. Look at me being flexible!

How did you feel about the first 15 things? Did you think it all seemed doable and fun or did the whole thing just give you the ick? Whichever it was, you’re most welcome to discover the latter part of my list. This post is done in the same format as the previous post to keep things somewhat consistent. I hope you feel inspired to add something to your own bucket list or even just cheer me on!

16. Hike the Cotswold Way

I found the Cotswold Way on accident by stumbling across a YouTube video about it some years ago. I’ve continued thinking about it ever since and to me, that was a strong enough reason to make it a goal.

The Cotswold Way is a 162 km (102 miles) hiking trail in the UK. The route winds its way through quintessentially English countryside and villages and ends up in Bath. Some people walk it in five days, I’ve planned on doing it in 7 or 8 just so I can stop and smell the roses whenever the hell I want!

17. Learn to crochet

I have a history of knitting a pair of socks where the other one is two sizes bigger than the other. I’ve thankfully upgraded my knitting skills since then and have been interested in crochet for quite a while.

Do I need another time-consuming hobby? Absolutely not. However, I might have popped into the yarn store after work the other day and purchased my first crochet hook and some yarn… Girl I just want to know how to make those cute animal pals!!

On the right, you can see my first attempt at a coaster. It was supposed to be an even square, so I have some ways to go…

18. Have an at-home picnic

There’s something incredibly cosy about the idea of a picnic, I just very rarely make them happen out in the open. Preparing everything and doing it indoors, during the dark and gloomy winter season seems like a fun idea to spice up this time of year a bit. Sitting on the living room floor with snacks and cute drinks, burning candles and listening to soft jazz… I can see it all in my head!

19. Do 10 push-ups

During my time in the military, I prided myself on my ability to do push-ups even when my fitness was otherwise quite shit. After nine years of barely doing any push-ups, imagine my surprise when I found out I couldn’t do them anymore! Well, I can, but only a few of the ones with your knees on the ground.

10 push-ups of the knees in the air kind might be an overly ambitious goal, but it won’t hurt to try.

20. Write a short story or a personal essay

I vividly remember going downstairs as a pre-teen and handing my dad a small notebook in which I had written a story. He read it with keen interest and told me it was good. Since then I’ve participated in multiple NaNoWriMos with varying success, had teachers tell me my writing was either great or too out of line with academia and started and stopped many different stories.

Since one of my personal goals is always to keep writing, I want to make sure I finally finish something. Not a novel, gosh no, but a short story or an essay will do just fine. I’ll be sure to share it on the blog too!

21. Take singing lessons

This right here is my public apology to anyone who’s ever had to take a longer car ride with me. I’m one of those people who can’t be silent if a song I know comes on. And to everyone’s delight, I can memorize lyrics like nothing else. Singing has been a source of joy and comfort and I’ve had both shower concerts and real-life concerts with choirs and school bands.

I realized I had stopped singing around the same time I finally got diagnosed with depression. Having spent years not singing, my voice is not what it used to be and I’d like to get some professional help to make sure I don’t damage anything in the process of re-learning to sing again. Also who doesn’t want to sound like Celine Dion?

22. Start a blog

Ha! The first completed item on my list. I have a hard time believing I actually did this, all by myself. But you are looking at the proof.

I’ll soon make an official post about my blogging journey so far.

23. Complete a 30-day challenge

There’s something fascinating about 30-day challenges. It seems like such an achievable time, but also long enough that seeing it through will have some effect. Not all 30-day challenges are created equal, however. Some of them can even lean into dangerous and toxic. (Looking at you, weight loss and fitness.)

I did Yoga with Adrianne’s 30-day yoga challenge for the first time this year and absolutely fell in love with how it made me feel. Maybe I’ll use that one as my challenge entry or maybe I’ll find some other inspiring thing.

24. Design and make my first sticker

Is there anything dreamier in this life than to have my own sticker and art business? For me, not really. I’m not anywhere near reaching that goal at the moment, so for my first step, I’m going to create an actual physical product. I only have sketches and illustrations and ideas but no clue how to turn them into stickers someone could hold. That seems like key knowledge to have if I ever want to own a sticker business, right?

25. Find a job that allows me to go home for Christmas

Oh wow, where do I even begin with this one? As you know, I work in the restaurant industry. That means I work when other people have time off. It hasn’t bothered me that much, until quite recently.

I have a lot of anxiety and sadness surrounding Christmas and most of it has to do with being away from my family. I’m not ashamed to admit that I miss them and being surrounded by the joy of my partner’s family around every holiday makes it somehow even harder. So one of these years, I’m going to go home.

Finding a new job is obviously about so much more than one holiday, but I thought this would make a good example of why I need a new job.

26. Attend a book club meeting

I have always wanted to be a part of a book club. Reading the same book and discussing it with others seems like one of the best ways to broaden my reading horizon and also continue the habit of being able to have critical and analytical conversations.

In the name of honesty though, I would not mind the blankets and the snacks and the drinks either.

27. Get pictures taken by a professional

I had the joy of working with some amazing photographers when I was a dancer. Seeing myself look good was pretty damn nice. My body has changed quite a lot in recent years and I’ve developed quite a negative relationship to myself in pictures. I feel like a professional would be able to snap me out of that, at least somewhat.

A photo shoot as a couple would also be amazing, to record us and our relationship as it is at this moment in time. That would be a new experience for both of us.

28. Do the Artist’s Way

The Artist’s Way is a classic self-help book for creatives of any kind. The 12-week program, written and designed by Julia Cameron, is claimed to have changed countless lives.

I borrowed the book from my local library to see what it was like. I’m not yet convinced; the spirituality aspect is a bit strong for my taste. But it does utilize one of my favourite tools of all time: morning pages. I obviously can’t say a definitive yay or nay until I’ve tried and committed to the full twelve weeks and nearing my thirties seemed like a great time to take on the challenge.

29. Read 80 books

Books and reading are an integral part of who I am. I could not tell you where or who I would be without the stories I’ve read in my life. This year my reading pace slowed down significantly because of my master’s thesis; I could not stomach written text any more than I had to for the writing and research process.

My goal is to get back into a reading groove, and approximately 40 books a year is something I can do relatively comfortably. I also want to branch out from my comfort genre and read a wide variety of different types of books.

30. Plan a 30th birthday party!!

No better way to end this list than with a party! I’m not a big partygoer in general, but turning a round number is worth celebrating. And having all of my closest people come together is always such a delight. The last party I hosted was a murder mystery party and I don’t yet know how to top that. But I’m going to try my best.

This picture is of the dessert table at the murder mystery party. Baked everything myself!

The entirety of my 30 Before 30 bucket list is now out in the world! Feels nerve-racking and exciting at the same time, knowing I’ve shared my goals and aspirations so very publicly and there’s no going back now.

Here are some of my upcoming posts so you know what to look forward to:

  • The running journey so far
  • I finished the first semester of a drawing course – how did it go?
  • An essay about family and missing them
  • Blogging goal complete – my journey to this blog and my thoughts on the process

Thanks so much for being here and I hope to see you again soon!

– All my love, Ansku
